Basically, all early companies were considered semi-public since they need special permission from governments in order to conduct business.

New York Stock Exchange appeared in the late 18th century, which allowed for equity shares to be traded. Also, the first stock exchange in America was the Philadelphia Stock Exchange that exists and today.

The way modern stock markets works is much easier from the one in the past since everything can be accessed from the internet. Many stock market exchanges in Europe and around the world, are electronically linked together. Therefore, making the global stock markets more efficient and more liquid.

Less regulated versions of stock exchanges are the OTC exchanges (over the counter) or bulletin boards. Usually, OTCs or OTCBB are listing shares of companies that failed to meet the harsh listing on bigger exchanges. Such over the counter trading is considered very risky and therefore not appropriate for all traders.
